Gilmore Girls Venting

Note: this article is longer than any blog should be, but I had to vent about Gilmore Girls which has been on my mind since yesterday’s Emmy nominations.

I’m normally absent from the Gilmore Girls fandom online, aside from random trips to Spoilerfix. However in recent days as I’ve entered the fandom I’ve discovered that Gilmore Girls is an example of something I don’t think I’ve ever seen before, fans hating the show they claim to love.

Gilmore Girls’ 6th season was choppy at best. The introduction of Luke’s daughter and the separation of Lorelai and Rory divided fans. However while Rory and Lorelai eventually reunited, April stayed and subsequently was responsible for the destruction of many Luke and Lorelai character traits. Lorelai became passive and Luke, once so in love with Lorelai barely acknowledged her existence. These things led to the final scene of the season, which I feel may go down as the most memorable scene ever on Gilmore Girls. Lorelai, distraught over facing the reality that she won’t be marrying Luke runs into the arms of Christopher, only to wake up horrified in his bed the next morning.

Said scene was leaked weeks before the actual finale aired back in May and immediately fans began to turn. It’s hard to come up with a justifiable reason as to why Lorelai would abandon all character growth achieved last season and return to Christopher.

Around the same time the firestorm regarding the finale was on the internet, rumours were brewing about Amy Sherman Palladino and Daniel Palladino exiting Gilmore Girls. They did exit and left the show in the hands of David Rosenthal, who the CW has hidden from all media. What’s worse is hearing Amy Sherman Palladino and even Lauren Graham(the most outspoken supporter of how unLorelai Lorelai was this year) describe how it was only natural that Lorelai run to Chris. As a fan of the show since the beginning this logic baffles me. Christopher as a character is entertaining, he and Lorelai obviously have a strong bond, but every season it’s pounded into viewers heads that they don’t work as a couple. I’m not gonna get into a Chris v. Luke debate, because this isn’t what this article is about.

Fans online universally bashed the final scene, simply not understanding why such conflict needed to happen. At TWoP, a place where Amy Sherman Palladino is worshipped on a regular basis, the finale forum was shut down for days because fans were so angry and negative. The diehards had turned on the creator. It’s sad, but also comforting knowing that while fans have to accept what was written, they’re letting their displeasure be known.

With one year left in the major players contracts Gilmore Girls could have spent it’s final year slowly and graciously closing the book on these characters. Instead they’re now gonna have to spend their final year fixing what Amy Sherman Palladino destroyed. I just feel as if it was a slap in the face to all those who spent the past 6 years watching the show.

What do you guys think?

Wow i dont think I have read an articale that has agreed with so much that i have thought about the 6th season. I totally agree with the Christopher situation and about the mess that the writers have left. I think also that they have put the whole Rory and Logan situation to up in the air, seeing as he is signed for the next season but is still going to London.

Good to know I’m not alone. Things just could have been so much easier. If only…

Why does Luke always wear a dorky looking blue hat? I’ve always thought that was so wierd. What kind of guy would do that? And it’s always clean looking. That coupled with the clunk, random “witty” pop-culture refs in the show really have always turned me off – in this 6th season in particlar. Maybe the switch in staff is a good thing. No?

Luke wears the hat because Lorelai gave it to him. It was one of his endearing Luke traits, until they destroyed his character.

I personally love the show… but also agree that the mess left behind is a big one… i can easily stand here and tell you that i dont want anymore rory/lorelai drama/fighting… been there done that… yeah its good the went through it, 16 years with friendship, it all had to explode sometime… but ive had enough! i believe that the cris thing is unbelieveable, but i think that cris has really grown as a charecter, especially after gigi(SP?). I think I would agree that their bond has always been there… but i think that they compliment each other in many ways, yes a bit of clashing going on, but isnt that necessary in almost any relationship today? were not in the honey im home 5o’s decade… I dont know about logan… im torn between him, and jess who i believe will come back for season 7.. who knows but i agree that its sad that so many are bashing a show theyve claimed to love for years. we just have to see how it unravels and hope David Rosenthal does something great and worth watching for the “final season”.
ps to all those freaked bcz they think this is a final seson… all we really know is that its the last year the main actors have theyre contracts valid(or however that should be stated)… the show could keep going but they made it al long time… the big 7(same as the WB cult hit “buffy”). well this is getting seriously long, forgive me, but i had to vent a bit too, its hard to hear all of te rumors floating aroung! but this article was great!
