It’s Mary Cherry’s World, We Just Live Here

With the WB ending I figured I’d look back on one of my favourite shows from the network: Popular. Popular was never a real hit, cancelled after only 2 seasons, but it was blissfully aware of itself and therefore often hilarious. Created by Ryan Murphy(Nip Tuck) Popular told the story of two stepsisters, enemies at high school but forced to unite when their parents get married. Neither of the leads (Carly Pope/Leslie Bibb) really stood out, Popular was all about it’s supporting cast.

It had reconizable faces such as Sara Rue(Less than Perfect – before she lost too much weight) and Christopher Gorham (before he became a show killer). The two standouts for me were Tammy Lynn Michaels as the frenemy Nicole and Leslie Grossman as Mary Cherry. It’s hard to describe Mary Cherry. She was so over the top and psychotic that it really was quite beautiful, so much so Grossman would go on to play variations of the same character in future series. To fully understand what I’m talking about, check out the clip below:

Popular won’t be remembered as a WB standout, but it was fun and completely aware of itself. If you can ever get ahold of the dvd’s I suggest you check out the two Christmas episodes which are variations on famous Christmas stories. Just well done pieces of tv. It’s sad that the show was cancelled just as it was hitting its stride, and even worse at a major cliffhanger.

I used to love Popular. The self-awareness was really great. I was really disappointed that it was cancelled, although it nearly reached the realm of self-parody with finale.
